IUI treatment

At Cryos IVF Clinic, we offer IUI treatment, where sperm from either a partner or a donor is placed directly in the uterus during ovulation.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is especially relevant to women who need treatment with donor sperm or couples who experience mild fertility issues.

What is IUI treatment?

In this type of fertility treatment, insemination is performed by a healthcare professional who injects sperm directly into the woman’s uterus at the time of ovulation. This allows the sperm cells to get close to the egg, which increases the chance of a sperm cell fertilizing the egg.

The IUI treatment procedure

Here is an introduction to what you can expect when having IUI treatment at Cryos IVF Clinic.

  1. Initial consultation
Your first step is to contact us and have a free, initial consultation with one of our experienced healthcare professionals, who will evaluate your medical history and fertility to assess whether IUI treatment is the right option for you, and whether we will recommend a natural cycle or a stimulated cycle in your situation.

  2. Hormone stimulation and ultrasound (only for stimulated cycle)
If we determine that your chances of pregnancy are higher with IUI in a stimulated cycle, you must visit Cryos IVF Clinic for one or more ultrasound scans before we further plan the course of treatment. If you prefer to limit your travel, you may – at your own expense – arrange for ultrasound scans at a clinic closer to your home. Hormone stimulation will typically consist of tablets and/or injections at home.

  3. Timing your treatment with your ovulation
Timing is important in IUI treatment, as the insemination should take place as close to the ovulation as possible, to increase your chances of success. The timing of your ovulation will vary depending on your cycle and whether you are taking fertility medication. Once you know the expected time of your ovulation, we will schedule a date and time for your insemination.

  4. Preparation of the sperm
If you are going to use sperm from a partner, he must provide a sperm sample in advance or on the day of the insemination. We will then wash the sperm in our laboratory, remove unwanted elements, and concentrate the motile sperm. If you are going to use sperm from a donor, you must make sure to order donor sperm from your chosen donor in time for the treatment. Learn more about treatment with donor sperm here.

  5. Insemination
Once the sperm is ready, the insemination is carried out by a healthcare professional who injects the sperm into your uterus using a thin, flexible plastic tube. For most people, IUI treatment is pain-free, and the procedure takes only a few minutes – all in all, you can expect to spend about one hour at the clinic.

After your IUI treatment

After having your IUI treatment, you can return to your everyday life. Two weeks later you can take a urine pregnancy test to see if the treatment was successful.

If you do not become pregnant the treatment can be repeated in your next cycle. Our healthcare professionals will also be able to guide you on other treatment options if the treatment is unsuccessful.

How much does IUI treatment cost?

The price for an IUI treatment is €500. You can also choose to have only part of your treatment at Cryos IVF Clinic at a lower price. Learn more about our prices here.

Do you need donor sperm for your IUI treatment?

At Cryos IVF Clinic it is possible to use donor sperm from Cryos sperm bank or another sperm bank. Learn more about treatment with donor sperm here.
